"Come, my friends/'Tis not too late to seek a newer world"

I took Maggie to the 577 Foundation today, an old estate across the river that's been turned into a nature preserve and community garden. I used to go there a lot as a kid and it hasn't changed much, except perhaps growing smaller. Maggie very much enjoyed stalking birds on the river flats, where my grandpa remembers people playing polo, and sticking her nose into everything. One of the compost piles near the community garden had forget-me-nots boldly growing among the egg shells and corncobs.

In the afternoon, I took my grandpa to his blood test and then he said, "Why don't I buy you an ice cream cone". And so we stopped at Penguin Palace and both enjoyed a bit of ice cream, something I can safely say doesn't happen too often.  I did some more crafting when I got home: ship signal flags. I've looked for a set from Michigan to Massachusetts, and haven't had any luck, so I decided I'd just make my own. Each flag represents a letter. I wanted a 7-letter word that showed a mix of colors, and I had to avoid the flags with black because I don't have black fabric, so I finally decided on 'Outward'. Outward Bound is a nautical expression for when a ship leaves the pier, but I figured there could be other interpretations as well.

Outward

The title comes from a line in the poem Ulysses, by Alfred Tennyson.

  1. I think Inbar already said this, but I love how you are filling up your time. I hope I can keep myself half this busy when I'm back home.
